In-pipe inspection is the most reliable method of detecting, measuring and identifying defects in main and some field pipelines, based on the use of in-line inspection tools (so-called "intelligent pigs"), which are complex and high-tech devices designed to be run in a pipeline without shutdown of its operation. In-line inspection tools move in the pipeline with the flow of the working medium (liquid or gas), while the pressure and flow rate, normally, do not decrease.

Before in-line inspection, the  pipeline must be cleaned internally using mechanical cleaning pigs. Further inspection is carried out using geometry inspection pigs (detection and measurement of dents, reductions), and then by means of magnetic in-linw inspection (detection and measurement of corrosion and other defects associated with the loss of metal in the pipe wall), as well as intelligent pigs operating on the basis of other technologies.
